The Swedish climate activist was in Bristol on Friday morning

Tens of thousands of young people joined environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg for a youth climate change protest in Bristol on Friday morning.

The 17-year-old activist arrived at Bristol Temple Meads station to waiting crowds as the Avon and Somerset police force warned parents to not “underestimate the scale” of the event.

The Swedish teenage activist joined forces with Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate at 11am and addressed the crowds on College Green.

She told the crowd it was up to young people "to be the adults in the room" and that despite the “beautiful words and promises“ from elected officials, not enough was being done to avert a climate catastrophe.

“I will not be silenced when the world is on fire," she added.

Taking aim at politicians, Ms Thunberg added: “Once again, they sweep their mess under the rug for us - young people, their children - to clean up for them."

The teenager was greeted to chants of her name from the crowd, many of them school pupils.

At least two schools in Bristol closed on Friday because of their proximity to College Green and some postponed examinations.
