‘Hands, face, space’: What does the government’s new slogan mean?

Earlier this month, the UK government launched a new campaign to combat the spread of coronavirus ahead of winter.
Boris Johnson first referred to the “Hands Face Space” slogan during a press conference more than a month ago.
Now, the phrase is being used to remind Britons to wash their hands and take other preventative measures to reduce the spread of coronavirus.
Here’s everything we know about the “Hands Face Space” campaign.
What does “Hands Face Space” mean?
The slogan combines three preventative measures to remind everyone of the easiest ways to reduce the spread of coronavirus.
“Hands” refers to washing one’s hands, which the World Health Organisation has said from the beginning of the pandemic is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and others.
“Face” refers to wearing a face covering, which is now compulsory in many indoor settings in the UK, such as on public transport and in supermarkets.
Finally, “Space” refers to social distancing and reminds Britons to stay at least one metre away from those outside their household to prevent the transmission of coronavirus.
Why has the campaign been launched now?
The campaign has been launched now so as to ensure everyone is aware of the small measures they can take to reduce to spread of Covid-19 ahead of winter.
On 9 September, England's chief medical officer, professor Chris Whitty, said: "As we approach winter and inevitably spend more time indoors, we need the public to keep following this important advice to control the spread of the virus.
"'Hands. Face. Space' emphasises important elements of the guidance we want everybody to remember: wash your hands regularly, use a face covering when social distancing is not possible and try to keep your distance from those not in your household.
"Following these simple steps could make a significant difference in reducing the transmission of Covid-19 and help protect you and your friends, colleagues and family from the virus."
What are the latest Covid restrictions in England?
From 14 September people in England are no longer able to meet in groups of 30, as the maximum number has been reduced to six.
This rule will result in a £100 fine if broken, and can be issued repeatedly up to the value of £3,200.
There are only a few exemptions to the six-person rule, which include office spaces, schools, weddings and sports games.
