A GP committed a serious breach of professional duty when he missed opportunities to identify signs of abuse on Baby Peter, the General Medical Council has ruled.
Dr Jerome Ikwueke last saw Peter Connelly eight days before the child died, aged 17 months, in 2007 after eight months of sustained abuse. He failed, the GMC concluded, to recognise the likelihood of abuse or to inform medical and social service colleagues who could have helped the child. The GMC will now consider if the failures amounted to misconduct.
