AN 'OPEN-plan' scanner has been developed for patients who feel claustrophobic inside enclosed hospital equipment. At present people undergoing magnetic resonance imaging scans have to lie inside a cylindrical chamber up to two metres long. A new machine, made by Siemens, has C-shaped 'jaws' that are permanently open, says a report in New Scientist. It will also make it easier for staff to reach patients during scanning.
