MOTHERS turn to cigarettes to stop themselves smacking their children, mistakenly believing that nicotine is a sedative, according to research commissioned by drug company Ciba-Geigy. In a survey of 500 mothers, almost two-thirds said that smoking helped them to cope with the pressures of a young family. Half believed a cigarette helped to calm them when they felt like smacking a child.
