New consumer devices unveiled at San Francisco's Health 2.0

Basis is one of many tech companies showing off its mobile health devices at San Francisco's Health 2.0 event, coming up September 25-27 and devoted to cutting-edge innovation in health technology.

Basis is garnering buzz in tech blogs on September 23 for its relatively low-priced wrist-worn heart rate monitor and health tracker device. The device, set to launch later this year, sells for $199 (€199, with Americans enjoying a lower price point) and measures heart rate, calorie burn, and sleep patterns.

Also onboard at Health 2.0 is French company Withings, maker of a scale that transmits your weight to Twitter and Facebook. The company will also be flaunting its new blood pressure monitor.

The new device, priced at €129, features a battery-operated cuff that straps around your arm and plugs into an iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Your blood pressure and heart rate results can be sent to health sites such as Google Health or Microsoft HealthVault, social media sites, or straight to your doctor. The monitor comes with a free companion app downloadable from the iTunes Store.

Another new product on display will be the IDEAL LIFE Health Tablet, the first electronic tablet to automatically sync data between healthcare provider information systems and patients' health records. The IDEAL LIFE tablet works on any cellular network, connecting consumers with their own health records when they need them.

Drawing around 1,000 professionals, Health 2.0 is now in its fifth year and this year expands for the first time to New Delhi, India, on December 2. After a European launch in Paris last year, the event moves to Berlin on October 27-28 as well. Similar events include Med-e-Tel, the Consumer Electronics Show, and eTELEMED.
