Millions of people are in need of help, from Japan to Sudan, from Pakistan to the Horn of Africa, and today, August 19, World Humanitarian Day honors those who roll up their sleeves and do their part to help make the world a better place.

World Humanitarian Day has been celebrated since 2009 and is a day to honor aid workers, shed light on populations that need humanitarian aid, and find ways to give back the your community or international humanitarian aid organizations.

It's not too late to get involved: You can go online and learn more about today's celebrations, or find out how you can volunteer or spread the word about areas in need of life-saving assistance. Also on the site you can play interactive games that let you strategize ways to save a village from a tsunami or other natural disaster, or step into the shoes of an earthquake survivor or refugee.

Have an idea that could change the world? Enter a contest to win the opportunity to fly to New York City to pitch your idea to Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the UN. Submit a 30-second video pitch of your idea by September 8 to enter. Learn more:  https://www.un.org/wcm/content/site/citizenambassadors/lang/en/home
