Home agenda: Lighting design at LFI, garden trends at the Chelsea Flower Show

After the close of the international Contemporary Furniture Fair on May 17, design of a different kind will be honored at LIGHTFAIR International (LFI) in the United States. This year's LFI, which exhibits and awards the most forward-looking lighting products, is expected to attract around 20,000 attendees. Later in the month around 157,000 visitors will descend on London for the Chelsea Flower Show, one of the largest and most important events of its kind.

Billed as a 'global summit for design,' the International Contemporary Furniture Fair or ICFF attracts exhibitors from 40 countries and around 23,000 attendees. Designs in the field of furniture, seating, flooring, outdoor furniture and lighting and other categories are represented at the show. Designers from the annual BKLYN design event will also be showcasing their creations at this year's ICFF. The ICFF represents a much broader spectrum of household design than the Australian International Furniture fair (February 2-4), but in turn is overshadowed by home design events such as Tendence (August 26-30).

LIGHTFAIR International (LFI) is an international architectural and commercial lighting trade show, this year's event is expected to attract around 20,000 attendees and over 475 international manufacturers.  A key component of the LFI is the innovation awards which honor the most forward-looking product of the year. In addition to these awards cutting edge lighting design will also be showcased at the ‘Global Design Pavilion' - for manufacturers outside the USA-and the ‘Design Pavilion' for all exhibitors.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Perhaps one of the world's best known shows of its kind the RHS Chelsea Flower Show attracts around 157,000 visitors per year- though this number is limited by the capacity of the venues temporary structure. The show can trace its origins back to the early 1900's and often serves as a showcase for new plants as well as a indicator of major garden trends. This year the show has two new dimensions -the first ever ‘Ladies' Day' and an iPhone app. Earlier in the year the latest horticultural trends in the southern hemisphere were revealed at the 16 th Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (March 30 - April 3).

The Australian edition of the world's largest digital IT and telecommunications event, CeBIT takes place annually in Sydney, Australia. CeBIT Australia is hailed as the country's largest ICT exhibition (but is only around a 10th of the size of its parent event, CeBIT in Hannover). CeBIT Australia is a focal point of an additional series of events (including AusInnovate NBN, eHealth, eGovernment, Cloud Computing and WebForward) that will run concurrently to the exhibition. More than 600 exhibitors and 30,000 delegates are expected to attend CeBIT Australia in 2011.

A design-oriented trade fair for the high-end Japanese interior market, last year's event attracted upwards of 80,000 visitors. Interior Life Style is a combination of two other Messe Frankfurt trade fairs - Ambiente and Heimtextil. Focused on Japanese, rather than international trends, the event showcases the latest designs for the kitchen and dining area as well as home accessories and textiles.

Billed as the place 'where smart retailers go to get ahead,' Pulse London is often the first place to see the latest products before they hit Europe's shop. This year's event is divided into five sections: Home, Gift, Fashion and jewelry, Bath and body and Launchpad. The organizers claim that over 500 products in the areas of interior design, gifts and stationery will be launched at this event. The event is product-, rather than trend-oriented and in that respect Pulse is similar to the Nuremberg toy fair.
