Baby Isabella and baby Jayden, welcome to New York - all 1,424 of you.

The Big Apple's latest ranking of popular names for newborns saw Isabella edge out Sophia for the girls, and Jayden retain top place for boys.

A total of 61,691 girls and 65,083 boys were born in 2009 and the next most popular names were Sophia and Daniel, followed by Mia and Ethan, the city health department said Tuesday.

Celebrity worship was a big factor, with parents naming offspring after singer Rihanna, the 107th most popular, and even after fashion houses Chanel and Armani, at 139th and 150th places respectively.

Jaden is the name given by actor Will Smith to his son.

Religion remained an inspiration, with Esther and Genesis popular for girls, and Noah and Jeremiah for boys.

The rarest included Nava for girls and Pinchus for boys.
