Jenny Slate says she accidentally invited a stranger to her wedding

Comedian’s June wedding was postponed due to coronavirus

Jenny Slate has revealed how a simple typo nearly resulted in a stranger attending her upcoming wedding.

On Thursday, the Secret Life of Pets actor appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she opened up about her planned wedding to art curator Ben Shattuck, which has been postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

During the interview, the 38-year-old explained that prior to the June wedding being pushed back, she had decided to send out email invites rather than traditional paper ones – resulting in her accidentally inviting a stranger rather than one of her close friends.

“We just wanted to send out an email invitation rather than one that has 50 pieces of paper and confetti and stuff and you just probably throw away,” she told Fallon. “So we sent out an email, and there was one of my friends, who’s like a good friend of mine, and I was just like: ‘Oh, it’s just this name at Gmail,’ put her on the list. I sent the email and then I didn’t hear back from my friend.

“I was like: ‘Hey, can you guys come to the wedding?’ And she was like: ‘Oh, we just thought maybe it was small and we weren’t invited.’ And I was like: ‘No, you’re invited! Oh gosh, check your spam.’”

But, according to Slate, the email wasn’t in her friend’s spam folder either, as it had been sent to the wrong person due to one misplaced letter.

The actress said the matter was made worse when she realised that her and her fiancé’s full names and home address were listed on the invitation.

“Not only was it like: ‘Jenny and Ben June 2020. Save the date!’ It was a picture of me and Ben being like: ‘We are Jenny Slate and Ben Shattuck and we live here. This is our home address,” Slate explained, adding: “I’m not trying to assume this lady is a fan or knows who I am, but if she does she knows where I live.”

The stranger won’t be at the couple’s rescheduled wedding, however, as Slate said she decided not to include the recipient on the email announcing the postponement because she “felt so awkward about it”.

“I don’t even know who she is. Although, except, I do, because then I was like: ‘Who is this lady that I invited?’ and when I looked her up on the Internet, she likes to wear top hats like a lot – like often she’ll wear a top hat in some of her pictures,” the comedian added.
