Justin Bieber opens up about having ‘benefited off black culture’

‘I am inspired by black culture,’ singer writes on Instagram

Justin Bieber has opened up about having “benefited off of black culture” in an Instagram post.

On Saturday, the singer shared a note with his 138 million followers explaining that his sense of style and his career has all been inspired by black culture.

“I am inspired by black culture. I have benefited off of black culture,” the 26-year-old began.

“My style, how I sing, dance, perform, and my fashion have all been influenced and inspired by black culture.”

Bieber continued: “I am committed to using my platform from this day forward to learn, to speak up about racial injustice and systemic oppression, and to identify ways to be a part of much needed change.”

Bieber’s post has garnered more than one million likes and thousands of comments, including one from Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton, who wrote: “Amen brother”.

The singer has been actively posting about the Black Lives Matter movement in recent weeks.

“Dear non-black friends... I’m paying attention to your silence...” read one.

“All lives do not matter until black lives matter,” stated another.

Bieber has also shared several posts about anti-racism allyship.

On Saturday, the singer posted about Breonna Taylor, a black woman who worked as an emergency medical technician and was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers in March.

The police officers present shot Ms Taylor at least eight times after entering her apartment using a “no-knock” warrant.

“Swipe right to see how we can help celebrate her,” Bieber wrote in a caption underneath a photograph of Ms Taylor and a series of actions people could take to honour her memory and call for justice over her death.

The calls for justice come after the FBI’s Louisville office announced it had opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Taylor’s death.

As of now, the three officers involved in the fatal shooting are on administrative leave but have not been charged with any crimes.
