Karens” are overwhelmingly supporting Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in the upcoming election, a New York Times survey has found.

The surprising support from women with the name synonymous with white privilege was revealed Monday, with The Times and Siena College releasing data based on two months of polling.

According to the outlet, which polled more than 17,000 voters in 18 battleground states since September and created a chart of the 10 most common names and their voting preferences, 60 per cent of Karens are voting for the former vice president, while 40 per cent are voting for President Trump.

The unexpected revelation was met with support on social media, where many said that the results showed women named Karen deserve an apology for being the target of the “can I speak to the manager” meme.

“The apologies we're all going to owe the Karens in our lives…” one person tweeted.

Another said: “We owe Karens an apology... they are supporting Biden.”

The poll found other interesting preferences by name as well, including that those with the name Richard are primarily voting for President Trump.

Overall, of the top 20 names of males and females, seven, including Susan, Lisa and Barbara  are voting for Mr Biden, while those with the names Thomas, William, or Nancy are more likely to vote for Mr Trump.

Interestingly, the poll found that “most of the names that lean most strongly to Biden are female, and most of Trump’s best names are male.”

However, Jennifers lean towards President Trump, with The Times hypothesising that it is because the president wins many middle-aged voters and Jennifer is the “single most popular girls’ name for Gen X”.

The poll also found that Donalds unsurprisingly preferring Donald Trump, with 68 per cent of respondents stating that they support the president, whereas Sarahs overwhelmingly support Mr Biden at 68 per cent.

As for the pair of names strongest for Mr Biden, the poll found Anthony and Maria are the nominee’s biggest supporters - possibly because Mr Biden is Catholic and “Anthony and Maria are popular among Catholics, including Latino voters,” according to The Times.
