Kate Garraway has spoken about what it was like to throw her son a party for his 11th birthday without her husband, Derek Draper, who has been in hospital with coronavirus since March.

The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband was placed in an induced coma after contracting the virus; he has since started to regain consciousness and recently opened his eyes.

Posting about the celebration on Instagram, Garraway explained that she felt “emotional” without Draper by her side.

“I was super nervous about Bill’s birthday this year,” Garraway wrote in a caption below a photograph of herself with Myleene Klass outside the tipi they had set up for the event, which was themed around the reality TV programme I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, which Garraway went on in 2019.

“We usually have a family do with grandparents & a few of his friends but obviously this not possible,” she continued.

“So we are seeing grandparents separately but wanted to do something for him & his mates in the garden.”

The 53-year-old explained how she had hired the tipi and kitted it out with camp beds for Bill and his friends.

“When Billy woke up he could not believe his eyes!!!!” Garraway wrote in a caption below a video of her son walking into the tent for the first time.

“Feel so emotional but know Derek will be so proud and pleased,” she added.

In another video post, Garraway revealed that Capital Radio presenter Roman Kemp, who was on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here with Garraway last year, made a surprise appearance at the event.

“And what’s a #jungle camp without a surprise visit from an @imacelebrity star?!” she wrote alongside a clip of Kemp playing games with her son and his friends.

“Thanks @romankemp you are a total star & great mate,” Garraway added.

The birthday celebration comes after Garraway returned to Good Morning Britain after taking three months off due to her husband’s condition.

“Don’t be too nice because I’ll get emotional,” she teased to her co-host Ben Shepard on-air on Monday. “Just go back to being rude!”
