Michael Portillo states that a new royal yacht would be "a symbol of the nation's pride" and will act as a showcase for Britain's design and engineering skills.

This view hardly squares with his government's sale to Germany of another symbol of the nation's pride in engineering skills, research and design, viz the National Engineering Laboratory at East Kilbride.
