Despite fashionable claims ("Marmee's girls', 4 March), I am unconvinced that Louisa May Alcott's Little Women is a feminist text. Quite simply, the girls are being groomed for wifedom - even Jo capitulates in the end. The new cinematic version (directed by a woman) only underlines the conventional, sentimental thrust of the story. It's not a book (or film) about ideas, it's about feelings.
