Valentine's Day challenge: Women encouraged to ask out their crushes on 14 February

Many people will agree that nothing in the world seems scarier than the prospect of asking your crush out on a date, especially around Valentine’s Day.

And while women tend to prefer to wait for the guy to make the first move, they're being encouraged to turn the tables with the Valentine’s Day challenge.

According to a study conducted by Michael Mills Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Loyola Marymount University, only six per cent of women prefer to ask a guy out on a date.

However, a sex and relationship blogger is now urging women to take their dating destiny into their own hands, by persuading them to take the plunge and ask their crushes out on February 14.

The women who have taken on the daring deed have then shared screenshots of their conversations on Twitter - and many of the responses that they’ve received have been great so far. (Although admittedly, some haven't experienced the same degree of success.)

It all began when Dami Oloniśakin tweeted the call to action to her 54,000 followers.

“Ladies, ask the guy you have a crush on to be your Valentine this year and tell him you’d like to go on a date with him,” she wrote. “Tweet me a screenshot of his response.”

What may have seemed like a terrifying idea at first has turned out to be an extremely effective way of bagging a date for Valentine’s.

One woman shared a screenshot of her conversation where she’d asked her crush to be her Valentine.

“I’m so glad you asked!!” he replied. “I was legit sitting here thinking of the best way to ask you!”

Another guy responded: “Lmao wow my wcw [woman crush wednesday] just asked me on a date.”

One man gave an incredibly enthusiastic response, writing: “Am speechless.. I don't mind spending d rest of my life with u sweets.. I can’t stop smiling!”

The Valentine’s Day challenge just goes to show how restrictive gender stereotypes can be.

In 2014, eHarmony reported that 82 per cent of men still believe that the man should pay on dates, in comparison to 72 per cent of women.

We say there are no rules. If you have your eye on someone this Valentine’s Day, don’t wait around for them to get their act together - go for it!
