Mazda has unveiled the first images and details of its new CX-5, set to launch at September's Frankfurt Motor Show.

The CX-5 is the first to use the brand's new Skyactiv green technology, which Mazda promises offers a record-breaking compression ratio and efficiency.

The new model has target emissions of under 120g per kilometer, the brand says, a factor which should help distinguish it from a multitude of steadily-greening rivals including the Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan and Range Rover Evoque.

Even at the higher end, automakers are trying to green their large models, with Mercedes-Benz recently promising that its new M Class will be 25 percent more efficient than its predecessor.

Nonetheless, Mazda believes its new Skyactiv technology, which will be available in a 2.0-liter gasoline and 2.2-liter diesel engines in Europe, will achieve "exceptional environmental performance for a compact SUV."

The new CX-5 will also be the first production model to showcase the brand's new "Kodo" design concept, until now only previewed on concepts such as the Shinari and Minagi.

In production, it looks like Kodo will mean a bolder face and low-slung body.

The model will be revealed at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, which runs September 15-25 in Germany.
