The 4x4 pick-up market has become something of a phenomenon over the last decade or so, and the Nissan Navara has a lot to do with that.
It’s a decade since the current model was launched, but now there’s an all-new replacement on the way – in the shape of the NP300 Navara, which will be shown for the first time at Frankfurt on 15 September.
This makes a major step forward in terms of its rear suspension – always a trouble spot on pick-ups due to the need for a one-tonne payload. Where the old model had primitive leaf springs at the back, Double-Cab versions of the newcomer will get a more modern multi-link set-up – and even the two-seat King-Cab promises a smoother, quieter ride.
Despite this move towards SUV-like road manners, the new Navara can tow the legal maximum of 3500kg. And Nissan says it will be just as capable off-road.

Power comes from a new 2.3-litre diesel engine which offers significant improvements over the old model in terms of both emissions and economy. Two versions will be available – a single-turbo unit putting out 158bhp, and a 187bhp biturbo.
Further improvements come inside the cabin, where Nissan says kit levels will be well up on the old model – itself a revelation on this score when it was new. Familiar options will include cruise, dual-zone climate, hill descent control and hill start assist.
In addition, the Navara will be the first pick-up to offer surround cameras and autonomous emergency braking. Most traditional truck users will be more excited by the promise of improved seats, however, as well as a new five-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
UK prices for the new Navara will be revealed at or shortly after its Frankfurt unveiling. Expect them to start at around £23,000, however, and you won’t be far off the mark.
