Motorists heading for France could run into problems as French shopkeepers and garage owners refuse to accept UK credit cards.

There has been a rise in the number of French businesses which say they do not believe British Access and Visa cards are valid, because they do not use the same identification system in the magnetic strip. However, an AA spokesman said: 'British tourists should stand their ground. The French have to accept

our cards.'
