The weasel must be a wee stripling if he believes that the April Fool student/labourers/policemen jape (Up & Down Canary Wharf, 1 April) has been around only since 1975.

I heard that story, from a teacher, when I was at school in the Fifties, and it has probably been around since before Vincent Van Gogh went to his first cricket match.
