Oatly UK recalls batch of oat drink because it may contain metal

Oatly UK Limited – a company that produces dairy-free milk substitutes – is recalling a batch of its Oat Drink Whole over fears it may contain pieces of metal from a broken machine part.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has confirmed that the drink has been withdrawn from sale.

The FSA states that the affected products, which are only sold at Tesco supermarkets, are “unsafe to drink and present a safety risk”.

In a statement, Oatly UK Limited said that although the risk is “very small” it always puts safety first.

The recall is limited to Oatly Oak Drink Whole that comes in a pack size of one litre and has a best before date of 29 April 2019.

The FSA’s advice to customers who have purchased the product is to “return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund” and “do not drink it”.

Oatly UK Limited says that point of sale notices are being displayed in all retail stores that are selling the product.

The notices explain to shoppers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product. You can see the notice here.

The news comes just days after Tyson Foods – the world's second largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork – was forced to recall more than 69,000 pounds of frozen chicken strips after the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) received two complaints that metal was found in the products.

The affected products include the brand’s buffalo and crispy style ready-to-eat products that were produced on 30 November 2018.

According to the USDA, all recalled products have a “best if used by” date of 30 November 2019 and feature the establishment number “P-7221” printed on the back of the product package.
