With the Academy Awards being such a momentous occasion, attendees often take it upon themselves to bring relatives as their guests so that they can savour the experience together.

It has become something of a tradition for mothers to play a starring role – both on the red carpet and during the awards ceremony – and this year was no different.

Cynthia Erivo, Janelle Monae and Charlize Theron were just some of the Hollywood A-listers who brought their mothers to the event on Sunday evening, posing with them for photographers and sitting beside them in the Los Angeles Dolby Theatre.

Erivo shared a picture on her Instagram Story of her and her mother, Edith, taken when the pair had taken their seats in the auditorium.

‘Me and my mummy at the Oscars matching,’ the Harriet star wrote in the caption.

Keanu Reeves also attended the lavish affair with his mother, costume designer Patricia Taylor, who contrasted with her son’s black tuxedo by wearing a white suit ensemble.

Several Twitter users expressed their admiration for Reeves bringing his mother as his date to the event.

“Keanu Reeves taking his mother to the Oscars with him is a grade A gentleman move and more of you dudes should aspire to be that class,” one person tweeted.

Another remarked: “Keanu Reeves went to the #Oscars with his mother and I love him even more now.”

Sharon Lyn Chalkin, the mother of Booksmart actor Beanie Feldstein, couldn’t shield her pride as her daughter was being interviewed on the red carpet by Ryan Seacrest.

The costume designer was caught filming her daughter’s interview on her phone, in a quintessential parenting moment.

While accepting his Oscar for Best Adapting Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit, director Taika Waititi thanked his mother, who he said he “lost hours ago” at the awards ceremony.

“Thank you for being my mother and for many other reasons, and for giving me the book I adapted, this film wouldn’t have existed without you doing that,” Waititi said.

Other stars spotted at the Oscars with their mothers included Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Saoirse Ronan.
