If they arctic conditions have signalled the onset of winter blues, then The Photographers Gallery might be just the place to get a fix of sun, sea and sand. Massimo Vitali photographs the Italians at play, by day on the beaches of

the coast of Tuscany and the lakes, and at night in the seething clubs of the Adriatic resorts. Vitali's skill is in putting such communal spaces in the spotlight and scrutinising the movements, patterns and groupings of the crowd. The artist is equally fascinated by the architecture and landscape his crowds inhabit. The beach shots (left), for example, are taken purposefully from a position in the sea so the people are seen in the context of the buildings behind.
