The Barbican's gargantuan "Inventing America" season gets underway on Thursday with Shaker: The Art of Craftsmanship. The display represents the first major exhibition of furniture and decorative arts from Mount Lebanon, one of the country's oldest and most influential Shaker communities, whose trademark style prided itself on simplicity, utility, order and fine craftsmanship. Works range from 40 large pieces of furniture to boxes, sewing carriers together with textiles and photographs.
