Pride Month 2019: 13 events taking place across UK in celebration of Pride

Pride Month commemorates 1969 Stonewall Riots

Pride Month, which takes place every year in June, celebrates the heritage of the LGBT+ community and its triumphs over adversity.

In recognition of Pride Month, events are held throughout summer across the globe in honour of the celebration.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a series of demonstrations which were carried out by members of the LGBT+ community in 1969 in response to a police raid which occurred at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village.

Following the riots, the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activists Alliance were formed to encourage the LGBT+ community to take part in the LGBT+ rights movement.

This paved the way for annual celebrations to take place around the world, which have continued for half a century.

Here are 13 of the best events taking place in celebration of Pride across the UK this summer:

Essex, Saturday 15 June

West End star Lee Mead has been announced as a live performer at the event, in addition to performers Drag with No Name, Vicky Jackson as P!nk and Jordan Gray.

Essex Pride takes place on Saturday 15 June in Central Park, Chelmsford, with gates for the event opening at 12pm.

Tickets for the event will be available from the Essex Pride website until Friday 14 June, or can be bought on the gate.

Under 13s go free, tickets for juniors (13 to 17 years old) cost £5, and tickets for adults (18 and over) cost £15.

Edinburgh, Saturday 22 June

Edinburgh Pride is due to take place on Saturday 22 June.

The day, which is free to attend, will involve the Pride Scotia March, in addition to speeches from a selection of guest speakers.

Marchers will assemble at Scottish Parliament on Parliament Green at 11.30am, before heading off at 12.30pm.

At around 1.15pm, the marchers will reach the site of the Pride Edinburgh 2019: This Is Me Festival, at the Edinburgh University Students' Association Campus.

London, Saturday 6 July

Pride in London is marked throughout June and July with numerous events.

The London Pride parade is due to take place on Saturday 6 July from 12pm.

Last year, around 30,000 people took part in the parade, which boasted approximately one million attendees.

The annual parade starts at Portland Place, before moving through Oxford Circus, Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square.

Bournemouth, Friday 12 July to Sunday 14 July

Bournemouth's Pride Festival, titled "Bourne Free", is due to take place from Friday 12 July until Sunday 14 July.

The parade is scheduled to take place on Saturday 13 July, starting at 11am from the East Cliff and ending at The Triangle.

"Our parade is a celebration of equality and diversity in the Bournemouth community," the organisers of the event state.

Independent Minds Pride panel discussion, Thursday 4 July

On Thursday 4 July, The Independent is hosting a panel discussion and Q&A at Century Club, London in celebration of Pride.

The event will feature a selection of panellists including Asifa Lahore, Britain's first out Muslim drag queen and trans activist, and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, as they discuss topics including what the role of Pride is in 2019 and how participating in Pride in the UK can help the global LGBT+ community.

Tickets for the event cost £20 or are free for subscribers, and the event is due to take place from 7.30pm to 10pm.

Bristol, Monday 1 July to Friday 14 July

Bristol Pride is taking place from Monday 1 July until Friday 14 July, with the parade due to go ahead on Saturday 13 July.

Last year, more than 12,000 took part in the parade to demonstrate that "hatred and prejudice has no place" in the city.

Glasgow, Saturday 17 August to Sunday 18 August

This year, Pride Glasgow is taking place on Saturday 17 August and Sunday 18 August.

Details about the march's route, which is due to take place on the Saturday, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Newcastle, Friday 19 July to Sunday 21 July

Northern Pride Festival takes place this year in Newcastle from Friday 19 July until Sunday 21 July.

Formerly known as Newcastle Pride, the three-day celebration will consist of the Stonewall Remembrance March through Newcastle's city centre.

Liverpool, Saturday 27 July to Sunday 28 July

The Pride in Liverpool festival is scheduled to take place on Saturday 27 July and Sunday 28 July this year.

The free festival, which will be held on the Tithebarn Street site in the city centre, will feature a range of activities, including a youth zone and a variety of food and drink stalls.

Brighton, Friday 2 August to Sunday 4 August

The Brighton and Hove Pride Festival weekend is being held this year from Friday 2 August to Sunday 4 August.

Last year, Britney Spears wowed a crowd of 57,000 people at the event, performing on stage in the UK for the first time since 2011.

The Brighton Pride LGBT+ Community Parade is expected to attract crowds of around 300,000 as large crowds revel in the fun of the carnival atmosphere.

Belfast, Friday 26 July to Saturday 3 August

Belfast Pride is being celebrated this year over the course of 10 days, from Friday 26 July until Saturday 3 August.

The annual parade is due to be held on Saturday 3 August, with the march assembling at 11.30am and beginning at 1pm.

Cymru, Friday 23 August to Sunday 25 August

Pride Cymru's Big Weekend is described as being Wales' "biggest celebration of equality and diversity".

The event will be held over the course of three days from Friday 23 August to Sunday 25 August, and is expected to attract more than 50,000 attendees.

Tickets for the Big Weekend range from £3 to £7.50.

Meanwhile, the Pride Cymru Parade is scheduled to take place on Saturday 24 August through the Welsh capital.

Manchester, Friday 23 August to Monday 26 August

Manchester Pride Festival, which is taking place this year from Friday 23 August until Monday 26 August, will play host to live performers including Ariana Grande, Years and Years and Basemant Jaxx.

Tickets for Manchester Pride Live start from £10.

This year's Manchester Pride parade, due to take place on Saturday 24 August, has been given the theme: "Deep Space Pride: A Future World of Equality".
