SWARMS OF giant grasshoppers could invade Britain from France and Spain and devastate crops and gardens across the country, a scientist said yesterday. The "superhoppers", nearly 5in long, have eight times the appetite of British grasshoppers.
"The hot weather in the UK will encourage the invasion," said Peter McEwen, research director of Insect Investigations, at Cardiff University School of Biosciences.
