Your assignment

Each month we set readers a photographic assignment and offer them the chance to have their picture published on this page. The brief for August is "The beach". Please send your photographs (preferably in print form, with your details, including a daytime telephone number, on the back) to Readers' Lives, The Independent Magazine, One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5DL. Photographs cannot be returned. The winning entries will be showcased throughout the month. Winners will receive a bottle of either Champagne or olive oil (state preference).

This week's winner

Lloyd Garnett from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, took this photograph "on a misty October day last year, in Scarborough". What appealed to him about the scene, he recalls, was "something about the arcade lights still glowing in the mist, and the expanse of beach".
