The Duchess of Sussex’s comments about the Duchess of Cambridge during the bombshell Oprah interview are likely to widen the divide between the two sisters in law, a royal author has said.

During the interview with Oprah, Meghan spoke about her rumoured disagreement with Kate over flower girl dresses at Meghan’s 2018 wedding to the Duke of Sussex.

Meghan addressed the reports that she made Kate cry and claimed that she was actually the one who was left in tears over the disagreement.

“I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone because it was a really hard week of the wedding and she was upset about something,” the duchess said.

“A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something. Yes, the issue was correct about flower girl dresses.”

Meghan went on to say how the timing of the disagreement was especially upsetting because there was uncertainty over whether her father would attend her wedding - he ultimately didn’t, after suffering a heart attack.

“I thought in the context of everything else going on in the days leading to the wedding, it didn’t make sense to not doing what everyone else was doing, which was being supportive,” Meghan added.

Following the disagreement, which Meghan said “made me cry,” she told Oprah that Kate “owned it and apologised” with a handwritten note and flowers.

Now, however, royal author Penny Junor has claimed that by bringing up the issue in the Oprah interview, Meghan will have made it harder for her and Kate to resolve things between them and also between the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge.

“I would have thought one of the things William was most cross about was the fact that Meghan threw Kate under the bus,” Junor told the Evening Standard.

“It wasn’t Harry, but it was his wife, and he must have known that she was going to do that and he clearly hasn’t corrected it in any way.

“It depends how Kate is feeling. I must say I would be pretty damn cross.”

In response to the Oprah interview, Buckingham Palace issued a statement: “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the palace statement read.

“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”
