This Morning's Ruth Langsford says she almost quit TV in the wake of sister's suicide

Ruth Langsford has opened up about how she was left so “heartbroken” following the death of her sister last year that she almost gave up her career in TV.

The This Morning presenter’s sister, Julia Johnson, died by suicide in her Surrey home in June 2019.

Ms Johnson had struggled with depression for years.

Speaking about the loss to Best Magazine, Langsford said it felt strange to be back on television in the wake of her sister’s death.

“It seemed wrong to be cheery on screen, when, inside, my heart was breaking,” she said.

Langsford added that, at the time, she had “no motivation or desire” to be in the public eye.

It was her husband and co-presenter Eamonn Holmes who convinced Langsford to return to work.

“Eamonn pointed out that he was, in effect, losing not one, but two of the most precious people in his life – Julia and me,” Langsford said.

“He showed me how I had so much to live for in Julia’s memory – and beyond.

“He pleaded with me not to let it win, by ruining everything I had achieved – and still had to celebrate.”

Langsford shared a photograph of Johnson following her death on Instagram.

“My lovely Sis Julia has sadly died after a very long illness. My heart is completely broken,” she wrote in the caption.

“She was the kindest and most gentle soul and I will miss her forever.

“As I am sure you will appreciate I need to take time to grieve with my family. Thank you for your understanding.”
