RYAN GILBEY'S FILM CHOICES
The Hanging Garden. Films about fractured, oddball families learning to understand each other are often awful and win lots of Oscars. Not this one. An enchanting and darkly funny debut from Thom Fitzgerald.
Gummo. What do youngsters do these days? Get high, cycle around the neighbourhood and kill cats, if this disturbing and original peep-show of white-trash America is anything to go by.
Breakdown. Ruthlessly effective thriller which fights the flab in these days of bloated running times and doesn't waste a frame.
