Selena Gomez shares supportive message to Demi Lovato after Grammys performance: 'Demi I'm so happy for you'

Former Disney co-star said: 'Thank you for your courage and bravery'

Selena Gomez shared a heartfelt message to her childhood friend Demi Lovato after Lovato’s Grammy performance.

On Sunday, Lovato performed Anyone at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards, a song she’d written days before she was hospitalised for a drug overdose in 2018.

According to Lovato, who discussed the new tune with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s New Music Daily ahead of her performance, the song was a cry for help.

“You kind of listen back to it and you think, how did nobody listen to this song and think: ‘Let’s help this girl,’” Lovato said. “I even think that I was recording it in a state of mind where I felt like I was okay, but clearly I wasn't. And I even listened back to it and I’m like: ‘Gosh, I wish I could go back in time and help that version of myself.’”

Following the emotional performance, Gomez, who first met her former Disney co-star when she was seven, shared a screenshot of her friend singing to her Instagram Stories, where she wrote: “I wish there were words to describe how beautiful, inspirational and DESERVED this moment was.

“Demi I’m so happy for you. Thank you for your courage and bravery.”

Gomez’s message of support came after she opened up about the love she had for Lovato following her overdose in an interview with Elle in 2018.

“All I’m saying is, I reached out personally,” the Rare singer said at the time. “I didn’t do a public thing. I didn’t want to. I… I love her. I’ve known her since I was seven. So… it’s… that’s what I’ll say.”

Gomez was not the only celebrity to praise Lovato following her Grammys performance. On Sunday, Sam Smith wrote on their Instagram Stories: “DEMI LOVATO. I am in tears. That is singing. That is heart and that is the truth.”

Pink also thanked the 27-year-old for her “gift”, writing on Twitter: “Oh Demi Lovato, you just tore me down.

“I’m so glad you’re here to sing those words, to sing like that. You just gave the whole world a gift straight from the heart. Thank you.”

According to Lovato, who shared a screenshot of her performance to Instagram following the awards show, her return to the stage was “so emotional”.

“What an unbelievable night,” the Sorry Not Sorry singer wrote. “My first time back on stage in almost two years. So emotional for me. Thank you all for the love, support and for sharing this moment with me. I love you all.”
