Selma Blair has opened up about her difficult holiday season while reflecting on the struggles shared by others as well.

The actress acknowledged the hardships of this year, including the coronavirus pandemic and the loss of her mother, on Instagram, where she shared three photos from Christmas Day.

In the first photo, Blair can be seen smiling and wearing a paper crown next to her Christmas tree, while the second sees her posing next to her nine-year-old son Arthur Saint.

The last photo in the album shows the Legally Blonde actress’s son opening presents, with Blair explaining that they were not able to celebrate the holiday with their family and friends.

“A quiet Christmas. We did not see our friends or family besides our tiny group,” the 48-year-old wrote. “I have had trouble staying awake. And crying.”

Blair then acknowledged why the holidays were especially hard this year, continuing: “ I know the holidays can be hard for some. The first with my mother dead. The first in covid. The first with more hope for our world than I have ever wished for. The healthcare workers and teachers and restaurant owners. All of it.”

She concluded the emotional message thanking her fans for their support and for “being here”.

“And I thank you humbly. For being here. Ps. The pine cones were very tasty,” she wrote.

The Cruel Intentions star, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018, previously opened up about the impact that the pandemic has had on her own life in March.

Speaking with Miley Cyrus on her Instagram show “Bright Minded,” Blair revealed that quarantine has been similar to her past two years, during which she found herself “pretty much in isolation” because of physical issues related to her health.

“I’ve been pretty much in isolation for two years because of my physical issues that make it harder to get out, harder to speak,” Blair said. “And now everyone’s on this same kind of daily trajectory I’m on.”

During the interview, Blair also shared her advice for remaining positive during the pandemic, discussing with Cyrus the importance of being there for loved ones and “keeping ourselves strong”.

“This moment is what we have. We hope for more," she said. "But even how we show our grace and being there for our loved ones, with keeping ourselves strong - and also being vulnerable, which is a form of strength, to me, and has helped me for other people to shoulder stuff when I’ve been nervous.

“So to be open, but also really take this opportunity to be the best you you can be, to help your days along.”
