The average stag or hen do abroad costs Brits almost £1,000, study finds

Wedding season is upon us and so is the time to start saving your pennies because, according to a new survey, attending a hen or stag do could put you seriously out of pocket.

A poll of 2,000 UK adults and found that the average pre-wedding bash abroad costs a total of £998.

Factoring in pre- and post-celebration additions, the data revealed that most attendees pay around £136 for flights, £125 for accommodation, £78 for taxis and £64 for trains.

Food and drink was found to cost each guest £220 while those planning on wearing fancy dress are also hit with a bill for £67.

Around one third of respondents admitted that they had to make financial sacrifices elsewhere, including not socialising with friends, going on holiday or buying clothes.

However, while 80 per cent said that the rising cost of hen or stag dos abroad was “staggering”, only 29 per cent refused the invitation to attend.

The survey also revealed what the perfect hen or stag do would involve after almost half said they had become "too samey."

Participants elected go-karting, fancy dress, paintballing and a trip to the casino as “musts” for a stag do, while hen celebrations were expected to include a spa treatment, cocktail making, afternoon tea and karaoke.

These new findings come after an earlier survey found that wedding guests were paying an average of £1,015 to attend someone else’s nuptials, and twice as much it was abroad.

The study, commissioned by Provident, for Hotels.com found that bridesmaids are spending £1,058 to attend the average wedding while best men and women fork out £1,211.

However, the price skyrockets if the happy couple choose to get married overseas, which research has found one in six do.

In this case, guests at abroad weddings are spending an extra £1,035 on flights, hotels, insurance and luggage totalling a shocking £2,050 on average.
