Every family is unique, with their own preferences and beliefs for raising a family and caring for a home.

However, as discussed in a recent Mumsnet thread, there are some quirks that go beyond the norm when it comes to family home habits - and cross very clearly in to “strange” territory.

The thread, posted in the Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU) forum, began with the question: “What is the strangest thing you’ve seen in a family home/life that to them was completely normal?” and has since received almost 300 responses.

Judging from the answers, there are some family behaviours that look completely different when viewed from an outsider perspective.

According to one person, the oddest family characteristic they’ve ever witnessed had to do with clowns taking up space in the home.

“I once viewed a house that had life-sized clowns sitting at the dining table and lying in the spare beds,” they revealed.

For another person, it was a Hugh Grant obsession that stood out as bizarre when visiting the home of another family.

“I went to pick up my son from his friend’s house one day when they were in junior school,” they wrote. “It was a lovely big detached house on a new estate so I was quite keen for a nosey.

“The hallway was covered from floor-to-ceiling with posters and pictures (of all sizes) of Hugh Grant. It was like some freaky Hugh Grant wallpaper.”

A celebrity obsession was also the main feature of another family’s home - but this time it was Elvis Presley pasted to the walls.

“It was an Elvis house. Elvis was everywhere. Life-size posters, cardboard cutouts, giant Elvis mirrors. Elvis in the bathroom. He. Was. Everywhere. The couple seemed really normal, just a bit obsessed,” one commenter shared.

Apart from celebrity sightings, other commenters recalled off-limits rooms, a fish pond “sunk into the living room,” and “a collection of drawings, proudly placed throughout the house, of copulating goblins.”

Strange pet behaviours were also shared, such as cats who were free to roam on countertops or a dog who “used to be able to open the fridge door and take food out of the fridge.”

Despite the oddities, some of the home choices actually make sense - even if they are abnormal.

According to one response, one family had “beds that hung down from the ceiling, they were attached to the ceiling (not the floor at all).”

Although strange, the hanging beds apparently offered extra space for storage use.
