From Ghostbusters to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the release of several successful female-led films in recent years has demonstrated the high demand for women-centered narratives among cinema-goers.

DC Entertainment’s 2017 film Wonder Woman broke several box office records following its release, including becoming the eighth-highest-grossing superhero film of all time.

In late December 2018, Marvel Studios’ first female led film Captain Marvel was named the most anticipated film of 2019 by online film and TV database IMDb.

On a more personal level, the impact of female-led films is made even more apparent when young girls are spotting dressing up in costumes in an effort to emulate their favourite female heroes from the silver screen.

Actor Brie Larson recently had a heartwarming encounter with a young fan dressed as Captain Marvel at the film’s European premiere.

Eight-year-old Illie, who attended the event with non-profit organisation The Female Lead, spoke the film’s stars on the blue carpet, including Larson and Samuel L. Jackson.

“She’s my hero!” Larson tweeted with regards to Illie following the premiere.
