Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham bonded over being called ‘worthless’ on social media
‘It’s a pretty specific experience,’ Dunham says
Lena Dunham says she and Amy Schumer found solace with one another after being called “worthless” by trolls on social media.
Speaking in a recent interview, Schumer discussed how she copes with the frequent insults she receives online.
“How do you rise from that?” the comedian tells the New York Times, before adding that her three-step coping method is, “Therapy, meditation, weed.”
The interview also highlighted the bond she shares with Girls creator Dunham, who contributed her thoughts on the pair’s friendship for the piece.
Dunham describes the vitriol they’ve both encountered as a “pretty specific experience”.
“Most people don’t know what it’s like to open social media in the morning and hear you are physically, socially and politically worthless,” Dunham says.
Dunham also adds that, in her opinion, Schumer is far better at handling criticism than she is.
“She’s titanium, and part of her skill is the ability to make it look easy.”
During the interview, Schumer reveals that at one point in her career, she took a step away from the public eye due to the condemnation she’d received.
“I was kind of retreating a bit in general after years of getting beaten down”, Schumer says.
But a conversation with fellow comedian Dave Chappelle at a basketball match gave her a much-needed boost, she explains.
“Chappelle was like: ‘There’s a lot of love out there for you, Amy. I don’t know why, but I heard it’,” she states.
The photographs accompanying Schumer’s interview have received praise online for their mockery of traditional maternity photo shoots.
In them, the comedian, who’s expecting her first child with husband Chris Fischer, can be seen chasing ducks in the nude in a New Orleans park and covering her breasts with handfuls of Spanish moss.
“This is my favourite maternity picture ever,” one person commented on Instagram.
“Hysterical and beautiful,” another added.
Someone else compared the photo shoot to that of Beyoncé’s, saying, “I can relate to these pregnancy photos way more than Beyoncé’s!”
