Good Day for leeks, as the vegetable was adopted as a symbol of anti-government protest in Albania. The motto of the main opposition alliance, the Forum for Democracy, is "Flowers not stones", but fresh flowers are scarce in Albania at this time of year, so protesters have been waving leeks instead.

Bad Day for Mandy, a five-year-old coati-mundi (a racoon-like mammal) at Brambles Wildlife Park in Herne Bay, Kent. After her previous mate died recently, Mandy was provided with a young male companion, Maurice, who has now escaped through a hatch in the roof. "We don't know why he left," the zoo owner said. "He seemed to be fitting in all right."
