Luciana Berger accidentally called herself a Labour MP while resigning from the party

Today is the day of reckoning for the Labour party after seven MPs announced their immediate resignations, citing a whole host of criticisms, including Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, policies towards Brexit and antisemitism.

Luciana Berger is one of the seven politicians to resign from the party and, during her speech, people noticed that she slipped up and referred to herself in her former role as Labour MP.

She began: "My name is Luciana Berger and I am the Labour and…" she cut herself off and laughed ruefully, before correcting herself:

I am the member of Parliament for Liverpool Wavertree.

People noticed her brief slip

On Monday morning, MPs Luciana Berger, Chris Leslie, Angela Smith, Gavin Shuker, Mike Gapes, Ann Coffey and Chuka Umunna said they had left the party.

Berger said she was “embarrassed and ashamed” to remain in Labour.

I cannot remain in a party that I have today come to the sickening conclusion is institutionally anti-Semitic.

We have only seen this situation – racism against Jewish people – get worse.

The leadership has wilfully and repeatedly failed to address hatred against Jewish people within its ranks.

It is for these reasons and many more that I have made this decision today.

I am leaving behind a culture of bullying, bigotry and intimidation.
