You need cover? Tesco drive

Supermarket giant Tesco is entering the fast-growing online market for helping drivers to choose a motor policy.

Tesco Compare.com will offer quotes from 30 different car insurers. In addition, drivers will be able to compare up to 25 different policy features so they can select the right deal for their own needs.

"Our customers have been telling us they want more help in choosing motor cover. They want more than just the usual 'shop around' tool for premiums," said Peter Dingle, managing director of the site.

Tesco has signed up some big brands for the service, including Churchill, AA, More Th>* and Sheilas' Wheels. It has also used its long-standing financial relationship with Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) to get it to agree to put Direct Line on Tesco Compare.

In the past, Direct Line has been steered clear of price-comparison sites.

Tesco's move into this market has ruffled some feathers. Rivals such as Confused.com and uSwitch have suggested that the number of insurers offered by Tesco is small. They have also called on RBS to create a "level playing field" by letting Direct Line on to their price-comparison sites.
