Portman's island offer

PORTMAN Building Society's subsidiary in the Channel Islands has launched a Gold Plus account that offers 6.65 per cent gross on investments of more than pounds 20,000. The fixed-interest bond offers 6 per cent gross for investments of pounds 500 to pounds 5,000.

Coventry Building Society pays 6.6 per cent on its instant access Extra Interest account, with a minimum deposit of pounds 1,000. Bradford & Bingley's 30-day notice Direct Notice account pays 7.1 per cent on pounds 25,000 plus, with interest paid quarterly.

Chelsea Buiding Society has a Base Rate Plus account offering 7.5 per cent gross, fixed until September, for investments above pounds 10,000. Interest is paid quarterly.

If withdrawals are made before March 1996, 45 days' notice must be given and 45 days' gross interest are lost.
