BT is still charging £1.75 per month for free caller display

The service is supposed to be free those who pay for 12 months' line rental in advance

BT could be hitting people with unnecessary charges again. And once again it is the issue of free caller display offered to those who pay for 12 months' line rental in advance. When I alerted readers a year ago that they actually needed to ask for the service to be free or be charged £1.75 a month, many did so.

But, ludicrously, now it seems you need to act all over again. Reader Ian Mowbray was one of the hundreds who rightly persuaded BT to wipe out the needless charge – but he has made contact to report: "Today I received an email notifying me that the caller display component expires in February and my account would increase by £1.75 per month."

He contacted the company – yet again – to complain, and after some exchanges about the issue, he was given 12 months' free caller display, as he was entitled to.

"The point is, it was on my account that it was free, as I paid for line rental for 12 months – which expires in October 2016. But if I had not responded as I did, I would have been charged that extra money," he pointed out. As Ian said, there are likely to be others who have received a similar email and "if they do not check it out, they may end up with an increase in their telephone bill". You have been warned, again!
