9.5 million shareholders in the UK, well down from the peak of
11 million in early 1991. BT had the most shareholders, with 2.5 million, followed by Abbey National with 2.3 million. Pension funds and insurance companies between them owned 49.7 per cent of British shares at the end of 1994, against 20.3 per cent owned by private investors.
