The deal

The online bank First Direct has cut typical loan rates for its customers to 5.1 per cent.

Good points

Customers are promised an instant decision online and can choose the length of loan that suits then, from one year to seven.

Bad points

You'll need to borrow at least £7,000 to get the lower rate. The bank says it is aiming the deal at those wanting to buy "big ticket items like a car or home improvements".

Conclusion

Personal loans have seldom been so cheap so, if you really need to borrow money, now's a good time.

If you're not a First Direct customer, Derbyshire Building Society has a 5 per cent deal, while Sainsbury's is offering Nectar cardholders a 5.1 per cent loan. In other words, shop around!
