Advantage to Bayern
Bayern Munich, seeking their first European trophy for 20 years, beat Bordeaux 2-0 in last night's first leg of the Uefa Cup final in Munich.
Bayern, three times winners of the European Cup in the 1970s, scored goals from central defender Thomas Helmer in the 34th minute and from midfielder Mehmet Scholl in the 60th.
Jurgen Klinsmann, who has scored 14 goals in the Uefa Cup, missed two late chances that would have given Bayern a more comfortable cushion for the return leg on 15 May in Bordeaux.
The prosecutor seeking a nine-month jail term at the trial of the Ajax striker Patrick Kluivert for vehicular homicide has said he would accept 240 hours community service in addition to a three-month suspended sentence and a two-year driving ban.
A community service order would leave Kluivert, 19, free to play in the European Cup final on 22 May for the defending champions against Juventus and for the Netherlands in the European Championship finals in June. The three-judge panel will rule on the case on 14 May.
