Four-year-old Amela Kurtowic returns home to Bosnia today, well on the way to recovery after treatment in Britain for extensive injuries sustained in a shelling explosion which killed most her family.
When Amela arrived last December she was unable to walk, and her treatment and recovery are largely thanks to the charity Child Advocacy International, whose work with Amela was partly funded by an Independent appeal. Child Advocacy is appealing to British companies and the public for support to continue its work with children who, like Amela, need help. Photograph: John Voos
