Secrets and Lies actress Brenda Blethyn was named Best British Actress by the London Film Critics' Circle last night and Mike Leigh's darkly comic study of a family in crisis was Best British Film. Blethyn was named Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival last year and at the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles, precursors to this month's Oscars, in which she also has a Best Actress nomination.
Trainspotting won Best British Producer and Best British Actor for Ewan McGregor, although he shared his award with Sir Ian McKellen. Internationally, Fargo picked up the lion's share of awards: it was Best Film, Joel and Ethan Coen were Best Screenwriters and Frances McDormand was Best Actress.
The Best Actor award went to Morgan Freeman in Seven and the best foreign- language film was Les Miserables.
