The brutal assault that killed black consciousness leader Steve Biko was common practice by apartheid-era police to extract information from political detainees, a former policeman said. Jacobus Beneke, a warrant officer at the time of Biko's death, told a truth commission hearing that there was tremendous pressure on policemen to produce results and to show zero tolerance of anti-government activists.
