STOCKS ROSE on data showing that the economy was still humming along, which should help corporate profits. Investors also cheered steps by the G7 nations to prevent economic problems from escalating. The Dow closed up 97.07 points at 8,592.10. The Nasdaq composite gained 14.2 points to 1,771.39.

"I think the report on the economy ... is bullish, and set aside the fears people had that recession is just around the corner," said Alan Skrainka at Edward Jones.
