Asian PC gets pounds 3,000 in race case
A policeman of Asian origin has won pounds 3,000 compensation and an apology from the Metropolitan Police after acting over alleged racial discrimination. Mohamed Khalil, now based at Lewisham, south-east London, complained to an industrial tribunal about racism and victimisation by officers while at Stoke Newington, Dagenham and Limehouse police stations from 1991 to 1994. Constable Khalil, 27, of Bromley, south-east London, said he was subjected to racial taunts over his personal radio, and that insulting messages were left in his tray and scrawled across his wage slips.
Detective Inspector David Michael, chairman of the Black Police Association, said: "The settlement ...and assurances that he will not be subject to further victimisation for bringing the case is welcomed ... The Metropolitan Police must apply a greater degree of sophistication and stronger resolve in dealing with these cases."
