TOM PILSTON, staff photographer with the Independent on Sunday, has won one of the country's most prestigious prizes for photo-journalism.
Judges at the 25th Nikon Press Awards named Pilston, 31, best features photographer of the year and presented him with a cheque for pounds 1,500. They praised his ability to capture life and movement.
David Swanborough, picture editor of the Independent on Sunday, said: "His strength is his ability to find the unusual or revealing image."
His winning entry contained a picture of Cuban life (left), the Rosemary West hearings, Chelsea fans being searched for weapons and saboteurs confronting hunters.
